Lioness Protects Bat-eared Fox in the Kalahari

This photo story of a lioness protecting an injured potential "meal" is an amazing example of motherly instinct overriding the instinct for hunting and killing. I like the way the photographer documents each step of the lions' interaction with the fox.

In a Smithsonian.com story on "What Animal is the Best Mother?" states lionesses "make especially benevolent mothers. In fact, each lactating mother in a pride will allow any offspring, including other females' cubs, to nurse from her." This makes me wonder if the mother in the photo-story above was benevolent to the fox because she was lactating and / or sated. If her cubs had been weaned, or if she was hungry, would she have killed the fox?
